I have sat next to Karen Ferguson and her dog at many Frisbee dog events the past couple of years and cannot count the number of times I have heard people ask her about her dog, Nikki. Nikki, short for Nikita, is a small (27 lb.) smooth coat Border Collie who just turned 3 years old this summer.
She does not look at all like your traditional rough coat Border and this results in many questions to Karen. You can hear the pride in Karen's voice when she answers questions about Nikki, and I don't blame her, because Nikki is a great dog with the quickness and intensity needed to make a super Frisbee dog.
Karen and her husband Patrick wanted to buy a dog a few years back. Karen says that the dog was the first step in "responsibility" prior to having kids. They did much research before deciding on a Border Collie (a great choice). They picked Nikki out when she was only 4 weeks old from a breeder near Hillsboro, Tx. and picked her up at 8 weeks. You guessed it; they had a little Frisbee waiting for her when she got home. From their research, they knew the breed was a Frisbee/ball playing breed and also had some interest in Frisbee from seeing the shows at the State Fair. They played with Nikki from day one but did not know about the local club.
